For many people, a new boiler would be ideal as winter draws in but getting one might be a little too pricey at the moment. Fortunately, there is a way that you can get the energy companies to pay for your boiler for you (or at least, give you a considerable discount on it).
In this article, we explain what this grant is, what the benefits are, and how you can get it for yourself.
What is the boiler replacement grant?
The boiler replacement grant is part of the government’s Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme. This scheme helps homeowners or private tenants currently on a low income to have a brand new, energy-efficient boiler installed.
The scheme was launched for two reasons. First, because the poorest in society were least likely to be able to afford a new boiler and second, because older boilers are inefficient, unreliable, and bad for the environment. By subsidising the installation and supply of these newer boilers, families will be warmer over winter, they will pay less for their energy bills, and the country will reduce its overall energy consumption.
The scheme has been a success so far. From its launch in 2013, energy companies have subsidised over 173,770 boilers for people with lower incomes.
Large energy companies including British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower, OVO Energy, Scottish power, and SSE are all part of the programme. To apply for a grant, you must go through an approved installer (more on that later).
Who can get a boiler replacement grant?
There are three criteria that you must meet in order to be eligible for the grant. These are:
1) You must live in your own home or be renting a home from a private landlord.
2) You receive one of these State Benefits:
- Guaranteed Pension Credit (Pension Credit Savings Credit and Ordinary State Pension do not qualify)
- Working Tax Credit*
- Income Support
- Universal Credit*
- Income-Related Employment & Support Allowance, or
- Income-Based Job Seeker’s Allowance.
Any benefits marked with an asterisk (*) are subject to household income thresholds which are based on the number of adults and children living in your home.
3) You must have a boiler installed in your home which is 8 year old or more.
If you meet some of these criteria, but not all of them, it is still worth contacting an approved installer for help as you may still be eligible for a discount on your next boiler.
Money off your utility bills too
With the government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme, you can save up to £140 off your electricity bill this winter. This is not a scheme where the money is paid to you directly, instead it is a one-off discount for your energy bills between September 2018 and March 2019.
This discount may also extend to your gas bill if your supplier is the same for both your gas and electricity. Additionally, any Cold Weather Payments or Winter Fuel Allowance Payments you receive won’t be affected.
There are two ways that you can be eligible for this scheme. You can either:
• Receive Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or
• Be a part of the lower income group for your energy supplier. Each supplier has their own criteria, so it is best to contact them to find this out.
Finally, there is no allowance for people who live in mobile homes in the 2018/19 winter.
What are the other benefits of a new boiler?
A modern, new boiler means that you will spend less money on your electricity and gas bills each month. You will also greatly reduce your carbon footprint – this is very good for the environment.
Additionally, having a new boiler can increase the value of your home. For a potential buyer to know that they won’t have to spend extra money when they move in on a new boiler is a great incentive for many.
Newer boilers also don’t have to be serviced nearly as regularly as older boilers. Additionally, if a part of your boiler does break, the boiler will come with a warranty, usually lasting between 2-to years.
If your new boiler is out of its comprehensive warranty, it is cheaper and easier for your repair company to find parts for it than it is for older boilers. It’s difficult and expensive to find spare parts for boilers which are eight or more years old.
How much will a boiler replacement grant save me?
This scheme doesn’t just save you money on the purchase of the boiler itself – the grant applies to the installation too. Below are typical costs associated with buying and installing a new boiler:
|Combi Boiler Quote||Range of Prices|
|The cost of your boiler||£625-£6,190|
|Boiler installation cost||£630-£780|
|Cost of moving pipes||£190-£310|
|Mechanical flush before installation||£440-£535|
How to find an ECO3 installer
In order to get a free or heavily subsidised boiler and installation, you don’t apply to the energy companies directly. Rather, you speak with an approved installer who then applies for your boiler replacement grant on your behalf.
We work with approved suppliers nationwide. They can help you find out if you’re eligible for the grant, and on top of that, they can also fit the boiler for you. To get started, click here and give us a few details and we’ll be right back to you!
