Worcester Bosch Greenstar boilers

The Greenstar range from Worcester Bosch is an award-winning range of oil-powered, gas-powered, and LPG-powered boilers. Each boiler in the series is either “A” or “B” rated by the Energy Saving Trust and, during their design and construction, real attention has been paid to efficiency of operation (bringing your utility bills down) and efficacy of operation (providing you with the hot water and heating you want when you want it).

As you’d expect from a world-class manufacturer, each model is thoroughly and vigorously tested before it arrives with the installer who will fit the unit into your property and connect it to the various pipes and the radiators which make up your central heating and hot water systems.

Output rates

In this article, we’ll list all the current Worcester Bosch’s Greenstar boilers across their combi, system, and regular ranges. Next to each model and model number, you’ll notice an output figure. The output figure refers to the amount of water than your boiler can heat at any one time.

When speaking to a potential installer, he or she will ask you how often you use your hot water taps and when. Using this information, he or she will then be able to calculate the optimal output range of your proposed boiler installation.

Efficiency rates

The efficiency rating you see next to each boiler is shown in two different ways – with a percentage figure and with a rating. The percentage figure tells you how much of the power your boiler draws is actually used on providing you with hot water and central heating. The higher the energy efficiency percentage, the lower your energy bills will be.

The Energy Saving Trust  rates all boilers with a 90% efficiency with an “A” grade and between 86-90% with a “B” grade.

What will your installer recommend for your property?

The output and efficiency rates of the boiler recommended to you by your installer will depend on the size of your home and how much demand you and the people who live at your property will have for hot water at the same time.

As a rule of thumb, your installer will probably make their suggestion to you based upon the following table:

Where do you live? Bedrooms Bathrooms Radiators Boiler size Ideal boiler type
• Mid-terrace house
• Small bungalow
• Apartment
Up to 2 1 10 24kW-27kW Combi
• Larger terrace

4+ 2+ 20 34-42kW Combi or Conventional

Worcester Bosch Greenstar combi boilers

Worcester Bosch’s Greenstar combi boilers are absolutely suitable for most UK homes as they offer very high energy efficiency ratings (either A or B) and they provide superior performance levels. Combi boilers provide both hot water and central heating from a small and compact unit – they don’t require a separate tank to heat or store the water. The way that Worcester Bosch’s Greenstar combi boilers actually work is to heat the water on demand so that it’s available whenever you need it for heating or through your taps.

Worcester Bosch’s Greenstar combi boilers also provide homeowners with an “ECO” function which reduces the amount of gas needed as it only draws energy when you turn on the hot water taps.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar gas-powered combi boiler benefits

In many British homes, space is at a premium and Worcester Bosch’s Greenstar combi boilers are manufactured to fit perfectly into smaller homes and apartments. They don’t require any loft space nor do they require a separate cupboard in which to keep a hot water cylinder.

Because there is no need to take up room in the loft with a hot water cylinder, you can choose to convert your loft or attic into living space without the need to pay an installer to move a cylinder from its current location. Combi boilers require less piping work reducing the amount you spend on labour and goods charges at installation.

If you’ve ever lived in a property where the pipes in the attic have frozen during cold weather, you’ll know the disruption this causes the entire household. With a combi boiler, there are no pipes in the attic meaning there’s no possibility of the pipes freezing during winter.

The Heatslave II series is the oil-powered Greenstar range of Worcester Bosch combi boilers. Especially designed for families who want the benefits of a combi boiler but who do not have the inside space in which to store it, the Heatslave II units perform exceptionally well in the harshest of British weather with no effect on the delivery of heat and hot water. The unit’s components are completely protected against the worst that the UK climate can throw at it.

If you would prefer the unit to be installed indoors, most installers will fit in underneath a work top in your kitchen if there is decent clearance for it.

They are very quick to install and they provide significant volumes of hot water instantly when needed.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar system boilers

Many larger homes feature a system boiler which use a cylinder for storing hot water but, unlike with regular boilers, they don’t require a tank to be fitted into your attic.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar system boilers are attractive and compact, housing the components needed to provide heating and hot water within the boiler unit itself. Many Worcester Bosch Greenstar system boilers can actually fit into a kitchen cupboard.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar gas-powered system boiler benefits

System boilers are better for homes where there is more than one bathroom or where water is in much higher demand than in other households. Worcester Bosch Greenstar system boilers can deliver hot water evenly and quickly to all of the taps around a home concurrently without any drop in water pressure.

The compact dimensions and efficient use of space with a Worcester Bosch Greenstar system boiler to house all the components make installation a lot easier for the company you choose to carry it out – this offers a significant saving on labour charges. As with the combi boilers, there is no need for a tank or piping in the loft meaning that you’re free to convert your attic into another room if you like and that there’s no danger of the pipes freezing over at Christmas or at other times of the year.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar regular boilers

For most homes in the UK, a combi boiler will be the default recommendation of a professional installer. Apart from in exceptional circumstances, your installer will recommend that you keep the current system you have – that’s especially the case if you have a regular boiler.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar regular boilers require a cold water storage tank to operate. These tanks provide the water needed to the hot water cylinder and to a special tank whose role is to keep the level of water constant within your central heating system.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar regular boiler control units are small and compact with most being able to fit comfortably within a kitchen cabinet or cupboard.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar gas-powered regular boiler benefits

Ideal for larger homes with a high and constant requirement for hot water to be delivered to the taps around the house, Worcester Bosch Greenstar regular boilers are also suitable for areas with low water pressure.

Installation of Worcester Bosch Greenstar regular boilers is quick and straight forward and these modern systems are generally back-compatible with standard radiators and pipework. Make sure you ask your installer for advice on whether a new Worcester Bosch Greenstar regular boiler installation will require additional work on the rest of your central heating system.

Worcester Bosch FAQ

Worcester Bosch boiler warranties

Each of the boilers listed on this page comes with a warranty lasting between 2 and 5 years. A warranty offers you peace of mind that, should a fault develop with your boiler within the warranty period, that Worcester Bosch will resolve the problem for you free of charge.

Check with your installer whether your warranty covers parts, labour, or both. When you do get your boiler serviced, make sure that the person servicing your boiler is a registered Gas Safe expert. Please note that most warranties require you to carry out a servicing once a year during the warranty period and that failure to do so will invalidate the warranty.

Worcester Bosch boiler repairs

Only Gas Safe registered experts are allowed by law to maintain, service, or install boilers so please do not attempt to repair your boiler yourself. Please call Worcester Bosch, your installation engineer, or your maintenance engineer for advice.

Worcester Bosch boiler heating controls

Worcester Bosch has embraced digital and mobile technology to help its customers better and more easily control their boilers. Once your system is installed, you can download the Bosch EasyControl app from the App Store or Google Play – it works like a smart thermostat. If this is not of interest to you and you’d prefer the standard manual controls, please let your installer know.

Worcester Bosch boiler error codes

In the same way as with your car, your Worcester Bosch boiler system can tell you when something is wrong with it. It does so by displaying a code which your engineer will know how to interpret. The information your boiler displays will then be used by your engineer as part of a proven troubleshooting approach to determine what he or she needs to do to return the boiler to full working order.

Please contact your installation engineer or your maintenance engineer if your Worcester Bosch boiler displays a code that you don’t know the meaning of.

Worcester Bosch boiler and renewable heating

With many of the current Greenstar boilers, your installer can connect them to Greenskies Solar Panels (also manufactured by Worcester Bosch). These solar panels and solar thermal collectors use energy from the sun to heat the water in your boiler. Ask your installer for more information.
