What Is Home Insulation?

Home insulation is a material or process designed to improve thermal efficiency in a property. This involves installing materials in the walls, floors, ceilings, around doors, windows and even chimneys, or anywhere where heat escapes.

Some areas are more obvious to focus on when insulating your home. Adding insulation in your loft and external walls is a great way to reduce your heating bills, allowing you to make fantastic savings. This means it doesn’t take long for your investment in external wall home insulation to pay for itself.

Before insulating your home, it’s important to check two things:

Is your home suitable for insulation?
Is home insulation already installed?

How Do You Know If You Have Home Insulation?

If your property was built after 1990, chances are it already has cavity wall insulation. For older properties, check for an ‘outstanding energy performance’ certificate via the government’s website. It will say ‘filled cavity’ if the walls have been insulated. If the walls haven’t been inspected but the age and type of property suggest they should have insulation, it will say ‘assumed’.

Provided you can get into your loft space easily enough, you should be able to see if any home insulation is present.

Types Of Insulation For Homes

There are different ways to insulate your home, such as cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, floor insulation, and more. We’re going to look at two of the most popular options that can make a big difference to your bills and quality of life.

You should also consider the home insulation materials available, as different options will vary in effectiveness and price, so know what you want to achieve, how much it will cost, and when you can expect to make your investment back.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation is made from either polystyrene beads, mineral wool or foam. Installers pack it into any brick walls with a narrow gap between them. While this helps to prevent heat from escaping through the walls, it also provides sound insulation and resistance to fire.

Cavity wall insulation is unsuitable for walls where there isn’t a gap at least 50mm wide. If you have brickwork in bad condition, it will also need repairing before you can insulate your home with a cavity wall.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, it will cost around £475 for cavity wall insulation in a semi-detached property and about £725 in a detached one.

Loft Insulation

The most common forms of loft home insulation are rolls of foil-backed felt and mineral fibre. Installers may also spray polyurethane foam or mineral wool right into hard-to-reach areas. Loft insulation is usually laid between the joists in your loft, which stops heat from the home rising into the loft and escaping through the roof. ‘Warm loft’ insulation, which involves insulating the inside of a roof on a loft conversion, is also available.

According to the Energy Savings Trust, loft insulation typically costs £300 in a semi-detached home. However, as it is estimated to save you around £135 a year on heating bills in semi-detached homes, it will have paid for itself in 3 years.

Benefits Of Home Insulation

The cost for home insulation is dependent on what type of property you have. For example, if you live in a detached house, you can expect to pay more than someone living in a semi-detached or terraced house.

However, there are many benefits to insulating homes, such as saving on energy bills and making it easier to create a warm, comfortable environment for you and your family. You can also make your home more valuable to people when it’s time to sell, as it’s work they won’t have to undertake themselves.

Benefits of insulating your home include:

Trapping more heat in the home
Lower energy bills
Insulation against external noise
Protection against damp problems
Helping to keep your property and possessions in good condition
